Why we explore space? The reasons run from head to heart. It is part of our nature as human beings that we want to explore and try to better understand the world in which we live. Space exploration is the logical extension of that need. Through the exploration of the solar system, we can begin to unravel the mysteries of our universe, and to better understand our place in the cosmos. Space exploration provides us with knowledge about the origins of our solar system, our own planet Earth, and about human origins, and helps to answer questions that have intrigued humankind throughout the centuries.

Solar system exploration is important because it provides us with an unparalleled opportunity to make advancements in science and technology which can be a benefit to all of humankind, while Space technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. The space program provides an opportunity for nations to work together in international cooperation through participation in joint missions, thereby promoting peace and understanding between governments and their people. Since 1958, NASA’s exploration and research missions have benefited people around the world through the expansion of our civilization’s horizons, the acquisition of knowledge, and the development of new technologies and applications that have provided amazing advances in the quality of human life.

This presentation starts out by posing the quintessential question, why we explore space? It describes the process of powering the future through inspiration, innovation, and discovery. It features the development of high tech jobs; many practical benefits that help protect and preserve our planet. It briefly addresses how NASA has taken the lead in answering humanity’s oldest questions and concludes with some real reasons. Important NASA programs including the Saturn V, Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station (ISS) which help us ponder over these questions are addressed in the context of shaping mankind’s future dreams and ambitions.
